‘Despicable Me 4’ Firing Off To $28M Wednesday, $120M 5-Day Opening Over July 4th Stretch – Box Office

Guess who’s dominating Independence Day? It’s none other than the Minions! Despicable Me 4

Despicable Me 4 from Illumination/Universal is set to make a whopping $28 million on Wednesday, even without Tuesday previews. This strong start puts the movie on track to hit around $120 million by the end of its first five days, through Sunday. This figure aligns closely with earlier predictions and reflects the ongoing surge in box office numbers, driven by a slew of blockbuster releases following recent strikes in Hollywood. Over the Friday to Sunday period alone, Despicable Me 4 is expected to bring in $70 million.

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given Despicable Me 4 a lukewarm 53% Rotten score, lower than its predecessor Minions. Despite this, Illumination and Universal need not worry, as audience reception tells a different story: the fourth installment, helmed by director Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage, boasts a strong 89% approval rating.

Internationally, Despicable Me 4 is set to debut in 52 markets this weekend, including key territories like Mexico, Spain, and Brazil. Already, it has amassed $25 million from overseas screenings, with global earnings expected to reach approximately $200 million by Sunday.

In this latest chapter, Gru, Lucy, and their daughters Margo, Edith, and Agnes face new challenges with the arrival of Gru Jr., a mischievous addition to the family. They also confront a formidable new adversary in Maxime Le Mal and his partner Valentina, leading the family on an unexpected journey.

The broader Despicable Me and Minions franchise has collectively earned a staggering $4.67 billion worldwide. The highest-grossing entry remains 2015’s Minions, which raked in $1.1 billion at the box office.
